Road Trip 101
So, The Big Cheese aka: Tina from The Cheese Corner and I took a little Road Trip together. Destination: The Wisconsin Restaurant Association Food Expo! We planned on leaving Sunday afternoon at about 3:00. Head to Madison and camp out overnight with Tina's brother and sis-in-law for the night, making the rest of the trek to Milwaukee early Monday morning a breeze! Well, do you happen to remember the forecast for Sunday afternoon here is Wisconsin? Crap. Rain. Sleet. Freezing Rain. Snow. Crap. Hubby announces Saturday night, "You guys'll have to play it by ear Sunday - the weather isn't looking too good". I showed my concern but inside I KNEW we were leaving on schedule. What could stop us? It's 140 miles to Madison, we gotta full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses. Ok, maybe not the smokes part....
Noon rolls around and hubby begins
pacing. He's surfing every weather website, phoning the Wisconsin Road Condition hotline and calling all known residents of surrounding communities for reports. It's now 1:00. "You better call Tina. I don't think you should drive in this", Scott says. I call The Big Cheese - Her Dad was a truck driver and Tina, well she's damn near fearless. Snow? A little snow ain't gonna stop us. So, we load up The Wagon Queen Family Truckster and off we go. Hubby still pacing, texted us every 15 minutes for status updates. It was a bad decision - I will admit it now. The roads stunk - really stunk. Cars in the ditch every couple of miles. But, we creeped and creeped and 4 HOURS LATER, we made it safe and sound to Madison. (Normally a 2 hour journey.) It was worth the steering wheel clenched hands though - Nick and Sue were THE best hosts EVA!
The Moral of the Story.....Always listen to your husband! Did I say that??!!
